The Journey:
Janssen’s Cork site, part of Johnson & Johnson, used Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to improve both manufacturing performance and sustainability. The site applied tools such as real-time release, adaptive process control and digital process optimisation to improve how production was monitored and controlled.
This case is important because pharmaceutical manufacturing has strict quality and compliance requirements. Operational excellence in this environment cannot focus only on speed or cost. It must also protect reliability, quality and regulatory confidence. Janssen’s approach used better process intelligence to reduce waste and emissions while still supporting growth.
The outcome was a 56% reduction in carbon emissions per kg of product, while the site footprint expanded by 34% to meet growing business needs. That makes the case especially useful: it shows that sustainability improvement does not always require shrinking operations. With better systems, better controls and better decision-making, an organisation can grow while reducing emissions intensity.
