Operational Excellence Goal: Reduce delivery miles, fuel use, cost and driver inefficiency while maintaining reliable delivery performance.
The Journey:
UPS faced a classic operational excellence challenge: a small inefficiency repeated across millions of deliveries becomes a huge cost. The company responded by developing ORION, a route optimisation system designed to make daily delivery planning more intelligent, consistent and data-driven.
Instead of relying only on driver experience or static route plans, ORION used advanced analytics, telematics and address-level data to recommend more efficient routes. The improvement was not only about “driving less”; it was about redesigning how decisions were made at scale. Route planning became a structured process supported by data, algorithms and continuous refinement.
The results were significant. By the end of 2015, ORION had already saved UPS more than $320 million. At full deployment, it was expected to save $300–400 million annually, reduce annual driving by 100 million miles, avoid 10 million gallons of fuel consumption, and cut 100,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year. This is a strong example of operational excellence because the objective was clear, the method was systematic, and the result connected cost, productivity and sustainability.
