Supply Chain Emissions Reduction at Scale – Walmart Case Study

Operational Excellence Goal: Reduce, avoid or sequester 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions across the supplier value chain by 2030.

The Journey:
Walmart launched Project Gigaton in 2017 with a bold operational objective: work with suppliers to reduce emissions across product value chains. This was not limited to Walmart’s own buildings or transport. It extended improvement responsibility into the supplier ecosystem, where much of retail’s environmental impact occurs.

The programme focused on practical improvement areas such as energy efficiency, packaging redesign, food waste reduction, transport optimisation and better product design. Walmart supported suppliers with guidance, reporting structures, tools and capability-building resources. This made the initiative more than a sustainability campaign; it became a structured supplier improvement system. The result was substantial. Walmart announced in 2024 that suppliers had reported projects expected to exceed the 1 billion metric ton target, reaching the goal six years early. More than 5,900 suppliers had signed up since the programme launched. This is a strong operational excellence example because the organisation set a measurable target, built a repeatable improvement mechanism and achieved value-chain-wide impact.
